The most exposed individuals not only show a stronger inclination to collaborate but also exhibit a more pronounced risk aversion. These two effects are linked, suggesting that risk aversion may encourage the demand for self-insurance mechanisms and collective protection.<\/p>\n<p>The results indicate that only a small part of the increase in cooperation\u2014about 6.6%\u2014can be explained by the rise in risk aversion. The majority of this effect remains direct: cooperation emerges as a spontaneous reaction to disasters. This opens up prospects for adaptation strategies based on collective efforts, which public policies could stimulate. However, the increase in risk aversion could discourage adaptation strategies involving risk-taking, such as the adoption of new agricultural technologies.<\/p>\n<p>In rural regions of Ghana, where livelihoods are closely dependent on the environment, frequent and severe flooding has lasting economic consequences. Farmers living near the White Volta River, who are more exposed to flooding, suffer crop losses far greater than those of communities located 25-30 km from the river. For example, during the 2017 harvest season, the most exposed farmers lost on average more than twice as many bags of maize as others. These repeated losses strengthen their willingness to collaborate in building collective infrastructure, such as dikes or drainage systems, to reduce future damage.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers conducted a field experiment to measure these behaviors. Participants, divided into groups, had to decide how many tokens they would contribute to a public good, knowing that each token invested would be doubled and shared equally among all. Farmers most exposed to flooding contributed an average of 51.6% of their resources, compared to 33.8% for others. This difference remains significant even after accounting for factors such as income, age, or education level.<\/p>\n<p>Risk aversion was also assessed through an experimental task where participants had to choose how many steps they dared to take on a mined path, with each step increasing both potential gains and the probability of losing everything. Farmers most exposed to flooding showed a much stronger risk aversion, choosing an average of 18 steps compared to 30 for others. This confirms that the environment deeply influences individual preferences.<\/p>\n<p>These findings highlight the importance of cooperation as an adaptation mechanism against natural risks. Public policies could leverage this natural tendency to encourage collective projects, such as the construction of drainage systems or the improvement of local infrastructure. However, the increase in risk aversion could hinder the adoption of innovative but risky solutions, such as the use of new crop varieties or more productive but less certain agricultural techniques.<\/p>\n<p>In short, this study shows that natural disasters do more than destroy crops: they also transform the behaviors and preferences of affected populations, strengthening cooperation while increasing distrust of risk.
